Upon acquiring the prestigious Rolls-Royce Motor Cars brand, BMW Group decided to build a new headquarters in England. And the natural site for this was Goodwood: a place renowned for its vintage car festivals and racing culture, and less than ten miles away from company co-founder Sir Henry Royce’s old home in West Wittering.

Here, in the picturesque setting of the South Downs National Park, architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw (also known for the Eden Project in Cornwall, the International Terminal at Waterloo Station and the National Space Centre in Leicester) was commissioned to make a beautiful modern building by the beds of reeds on the lake. It opened in 2003, was extended in 2012, and is now home to more than 1,400 employees building by hand up to 20 motor cars a day.

So when Rolls-Royce saw the need to provide more areas of collaboration for their staff – and in keeping with Sir Henry Royce’s maxim, “Strive for perfection in everything you do” – they decided to install a series of our Railway Carriage meeting pods for their talented craftspeople and engineers. These informal, multipurpose spaces are great for holding smaller meetings and helping colleagues to come up with great ideas together.

That’s not all. In collaboration with Showcase Interiors, Spacestor customised these particular Railway Carriages with a walnut surround to match the luxurious dashboards and interiors that the world-famous cars are renowned for. As Jonathan Peedell, production manager at the plant’s Woodshop explains, “Wood is one of the defining features of a Rolls-Royce. The craftsmanship seen in a Rolls-Royce goes beyond traditional automotive woodwork. It is closer to what you would find in fine furniture or in a super yacht.”

We are delighted to have worked with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars on these customised collaborative spaces for their award-winning manufacturing facility and headquarters.
